Campus Developments

Wintec are constantly enhancing the atmosphere and environment of the campuses by redeveloping campus structures and spaces. These developments produce functional spaces that deliver optimal learning experiences for students, productive working environments for staff and lively social areas for everyone.

We are constantly researching to build a campus that will last well into the future. Many concepts used in creating and establishing the new spaces on our campuses have been successfully proven worldwide to enhance learning outcomes and assist in establishing better relationships between students and their learning spaces; making our campus more like a second home where students and staff enjoy spending time learning, working and socialising.

We realise that students and staff need to be comfortable in their working environments in order to produce positive outcomes. The team, therefore, strive to create spaces which are flexible, modern, vibrant and lively.

Wintec intends to lead the way into the future of learning environments in New Zealand. Our campuses will be constantly transforming to meet the pressing needs of future learners. These modifications are fresh, new and exciting and are something that all Wintec staff and students can truly look forward to!

New Spaces on Campus

Prototype Rotokauri - Room C.G21– Rotokauri Campus

We are always on the lookout for ways to improve student learning experiences here at Wintec. Research has proven that a large part of student learning experience relates to the spaces in which the learning takes place.

The Rotokauri prototype room is being used to trial new learning concepts related to space and technology, this trial will assist us in determining which concepts will work well for Wintec. These new changes to learning will help Wintec to develop a campus that will last well into the future.

The creation of this prototype room marks a step in the right direction for improving Wintec's utilisation of both space and technology in a way that will be beneficial for both students and their tutors.

B Block Level one – Staff open plan office space

The recently refurbished B Block level one space is a new and innovative approach to an open plan office environment.

This aim of this flexible work environment is to empower people to work anytime, anywhere with any device. In this space ‘work’ no longer means owning a desk; it means having guaranteed access to the right facilities for getting work done.

As well as a variety of workspaces, the floor includes meeting rooms, kitchenette, breakaway areas, photocopying and stationery facilities, and restrooms.

Multi-story Car Park on the Wintec City Campus

This new addition to our campus structure has provided additional parking capacity for 257 cars. These parks cover 5 ½ floors of the car park building.

The car park is currently available for staff and event guest parking, and has the ability for usage to be easily reconfigured to support the campuses roading development.

The car park is an impressive addition to our City Campus with its north-east facing glass façade being a feature of the Gate One entry to the campus.

Projects in Progress

Wintec Wharenui

As part of Wintec’s modernisation programme and commitment to Maori achievement, a wharenui is being built beside the Gallagher Hub on our city campus.
The wharenui will enhance Maori achievement at Wintec by supporting students, staff and the community with their matauranga Maori (Maori education). It will also provide a spiritual home and identity for Maori on campus.

Three areas make up the contemporary version of a traditional wharenui: a whare runanga (meeting house), whare kai (dining room and kitchen) and an administration area. The three buildings will share one roof and a courtyard.

The flexible multipurpose wharenui will be used as a:

Teaching space for kaupapa Maori (Maori ideology), Wintec programmes and student workshops.

Event space for Maori, Pasifika, international delegations and general Wintec events.

Whare with amenities to offer manaakitanga (Maori hospitality).Place to embrace Pasifika and
other diverse cultures and communities.

Space for staff and students to meet for hui (meeting or social gathering), karakia (prayer) and waiata (song), karakia (prayer) and waiata (song)

This building is scheduled to be completed in January 2012

Planned Future Projects

Prototype D Block – New learning space

The prototype room at Rotokauri has been a success, there have been many staff and students interested in viewing and utilising the new space. Such spaces are the way of the future and have proved to be the best way to demonstrate new learning spaces to staff and students.

This room, like the room at Rotokauri, will enable Wintec to further develop learning spaces in a way that will improve utilisation of both space and technology. These changes will be beneficial to both students and staff.

B Block Reception

The Corporate Reception refurbishment project beginning 28 November will modernise the B Block reception area to make it more usable for staff and more pleasant for visitors to the building. This project will minimize the need for the smaller reception areas scattered throughout B Block while creating a highly functional area with a fresh new look.

This refurbishment is scheduled to begin on Monday 28 November

Windows Restaurant at Rotokauri - undergoing an exciting facelift!

The students will be finished studying at the end of November so we are taking this prime opportunity to refurbish the restaurants dining area.

As part of this refurbishment, the area will be given a fresh coat of paint, brand new carpet, new decorative features and a furniture upholstery makeover. The changes to Windows will provide future clients with a modernised, refreshed restaurant atmosphere.

This refurbishment is scheduled to begin on Monday 28 November

Kids@Wintec Relocation

Kidz@Wintec is being relocated to the edge of Tristram Street in between High Street (Gate 3 Entry) and Waikato Street (Gate 4 Exit). While this relocation is primarily driven by a new campus roading layout, the new location allows for expansion of the outdoor play area as well as better traffic management around the childcare centre itself.
The relocation is scheduled to take place from the 5th of December onwards

Trades and Engineering - Rotokauri Campus

The Trades and Engineering Project will modernise the way engineering, built environment, and vocational trades training is delivered.

This project will include reviewing and redesigning programmes to suit both the needs of the learner and industry for innovative, technology-driven, efficient and flexible learning.

Modernisation will be both pedagogical and physical in nature, changing both styles of learning and teaching and the physical environment and equipment.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2012.

R Block - City Campus

The Block R project will redevelop the facade and front spaces of the Media Arts facility which provide a street image for Wintec on Collingwood Street. The design element of this project is near completion.
A construction start date has not yet been scheduled for this development.

Citygate Development - A new neighbour for Wintec

Citygate is a new office building being developed by McConnell Property on the corner of Anglesea and Ward Streets, adjacent to Wintec and the Centre Place shopping mall. This building will further assist with connecting Wintec’s Tristram street campus to the city.

The five-storey, 5,300 square-metre building will be made up of underground car parking, retail/ café outlets and 3 levels of tenanted offices.

Construction for this project is scheduled to begin at the end of 2011.
