EXPLORE - celebrating postgraduate study and research at Wintec
Between 50 and 60 invited guests attended the “Explore” Evening function on 27th October. Former and current postgraduate students, industry experts and Wintec staff caught up over a glass of bubbly, nibbles and musical entertainment by the Nick Kraenzlin Band. This was followed by research presentations by former and current postgraduate students and the announcement of the recipients of Wintec’s inaugural Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards.

Assisting with your Postgraduate Nursing and Social Practise Studies
Wintec's Student Learning Services and the Library are offering free researching and writing workshops for our postgraduate nursing and social practise students in Hamilton and in Tauranga. The topics, covering essay structure, APA referencing, literature reviews and library/information research skills, will assist you preparing for your postgraduate nursing and social practise studies.

The Vodafone Foundation, in association with SYHPANZ (Society of Youth Health Professionals Aotearoa New Zealand) is proud to offer the inaugural Vodafone New Zealand Foundation Youth Health Fellowship and is calling for applicants. Find out more.
Health Workforce New Zealand offers funding to Registered Nurses to undertake postgraduate study.
Please check with your employer about Health Workforce funding. Further useful links are: Waikato DHB, Lakes DHB, Counties Manukau DHB and Bay of Plenty DHB.
Other funding options
There are several other funding options available to you:
- There is a wide variety of scholarships available to students wanting to do postgraduate nursing studies. Have a look at the latest scholarship flyer or search by area; there are several scholarship areas that might be of interest to you.
- You might qualify for limited full-time status through StudyLink, by enrolling in two modules in 2011. Postgraduate nursing study is offered part time for students to be able to fulfil their work commitments.

Tobacco control seminars 2011 – sponsorship for delegates available
Sponsorship for Youth Development delegates and Maori and Pacific delegates is available to attend seminars in Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch and Wellington.
Sponsorship for Māori and Pacific delegates
The Smokefree Coalition will sponsor registration for 40 Māori and Pacific delegates. To apply, please describe in 300 words or less your role, and the difference you will make in helping Māori and Pacific communities to become tobacco free.
Sponsorship for Youth Development delegates available
The Smokefree Coalition will also sponsor registration for 10 delegates working with youth and their prevention of smoking uptake. To apply, please describe in 300 words or less your role and the difference you hope to make preventing children from taking up smoking.
Please note you do not have to be a health worker to apply. If you know of Māori and Pacific leaders or anyone working with youth who wish to champion tobacco control in their community, please forward this information to them and encourage them to apply. All applications for grants to be sent to Prudence Stone at Director@sfc.org.nz or Executive Director, PO Box 12 084 Wellington. Applications close Thursday October 27th. Successful applicants will be notified on Monday October 31st.
The November tobacco control sector seminars will take place in four regions around the country. The seminars will provide an excellent chance for tobacco control workers to gain an insight into the Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 goal and to contribute to building a strategic approach to tobacco control while you catch-up with your colleagues.
The seminars will run from 9am to 4pm and will be held in:
- Auckland – Wednesday 2 November 2011, Holiday Inn, Auckland Airport
- Rotorua – Thursday 3 November 2011, Holiday Inn, Rotorua
- Wellington – Wednesday 16 November 2011, Copthorne, Oriental Bay
- Christchurch – Thursday 17 November 2011, Copthorne Commodore, Christchurch Airport
