Wintec Reports Good Growth And Outlook

Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) has reported growth of more than 12% in its provision in the Waikato region.

Chief executive Mark Flowers said this represented around 400 more equivalent full-time students (EFTS) being taught on its Hamilton campuses this year.

He said the institute’s international student enrolments also continued to grow and were currently at 529 EFTS, 98 more than this time last year.

“We’ve already exceeded our budget targets for the year and are confident of further growth throughout the rest of the year. We expect to end the year with sound financial result.”

Mr Flowers said the institute also expected to achieve the 3% surplus sought by the Government next year.

He said that while the recession may be having some impact on increased enrolments, Wintec had also experienced a similar level of growth in student numbers in 2008.

“Our performance can really be attributed to our concerted efforts to modernise our campuses and teaching, work more closely with employers and strengthen ties with international education providers.”

Construction work has begun on a student hub on the institute’s Avalon campus and plans are underway for a major technology-focused upgrade of its trades facilities, both due for completion in 2010. The renovation of its well-known historical building overlooking the CBD will also be completed mid next year, making the campus more accessible and improving the aesthetics of the area, said Mr Flowers.

“I think people will be more than pleasantly surprised at the difference this development will make in terms of enhancing the look and feel of this particular area of the CBD,” he said.

The institute is also set to launch its new research and development strategy to industry partners this month, which will see more businesses benefit from applied research.
