Wintec student excels at NZ Fashion Week

Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) photography major Marcelle Te Huia has beaten a fourteen strong line-up of tertiary students to win the Sony annual Alpha D-SLR Photography competition, aimed at giving up-and-coming photographers the chance to showcase their talents at Air New Zealand Fashion Week.

Yesterday she was announced the winner. The competition invited entries from individuals currently undertaking tertiary study relating to photography or those planning to study in 2010 and offers the fifteen finalists a window of opportunity to take photos in a professional environment.

Almost 100 entries were submitted from across the country, and fifteen impressive entrants have been chosen to compete at Fashion Week.

The photographers showcased their talent with a Sony Alpha A380Y twin lens photography kit. Each finalist was be given an all access pass to Fashion Week from 22 to 25 September and was required to submit two shots at the end of each day, one catwalk image and one ambient image, with a total of eight shots over Fashion Week making up their entry.

Photos were judged at the end of the week.

Marcelle  has been  awarded a Sony Alpha camera package worth over $2,500 and a scholarship for tertiary fees up to $3,000 for a course relating to fine arts, design or photography in 2010.

"The sony competition at fashion week was a great way to get students like me involved in one of New Zealand's top events, and to give us the opportunity to test and refine our skills as photographers.

It was amazing to be apart of fashion week overall, but the highlight for me was having full access to all the shows as a photographer and being amongst professional runway photographers.

I was both overwhelmed and excited when announced the winner of this year's competition, and have gained a lot more confidence in my work and within myself as a photographer."

Marcelle succeeded ahead of fourteen other finalists:
