INSPIRATION FOR CATWALK CREATION

Flax, seed pods, feathers, copper wire and recycled birds netting were used in this year’s Matariki Wearable Arts winning creation.

The designer, Wintec staff member Marion Tahana, based her design on a whakatauaki (proverb) – “E kore au e ngaro, he kakano i ruia mai I Rangiatea” which translates to “I shall never be lost, a seed scattered from Rangiatea”.

She says: “This whakatauaki has been used as inspiration for my kakahu (cloak) as it reminds us of the things that are inherent to indigenous cultural being and knowledge that is handed down through the generations.

“One example is to continue our belief and celebration of Matariki and to learn its significance to Maori and other people of the Pacific. Rangiatea or Ra’iatea is remembered as an island north-west of Tahiti. From this we can perhaps think of Matariki as a time to reminisce on events and people that over the past year have added to the continued fabric of our lives, planting seeds of hope.”

The show, which returned to its roots on Wintec’s city campus for the first time in five years, was a huge success with more than 20 designs gracing the catwalk and a full audience. Wintec’s hair and beauty students styled the models’ hair and makeup, transforming them for their runway debuts.
