Top 10 things to do at Spark

Spark Festival of Media, Arts and Design runs from August 9-13 and there really is something to interest everyone. Here are some must-sees.  

1. Help Spark kick off. At 9am, there will be a quick launch and a talk by Elisabeth Vaneveld from The Big Idea. After this, noted NZ photographer Rebecca Swan will be talking about ‘Making art and money’.
    
2. Attend ‘Straight from the horse’s mouth’ - a session focusing on graduates moving into the creative industries sector.
    
3. Sign up for a workshop with a guest presenter.
    
4. Pecha Kucha is always a great event, featuring mini presentations on a variety of topics.
    
5. Take in as many presenters as possible! Spark has fantastic speakers from New Zealand and around the world including filmmaker Rastko Ćirić, design agency Super Nature, Elisabeth Vaneveld (The Big Idea), artist and photographer Rebecca Swan, singer/songwriter Vince Harder and Fairfax’s social media manager Greer McDonald.
    
6. Relax by watching a short film in the Ramp Gallery’s video lounge.
    
7. Take a rare ‘behind the scenes at the Museum’ tour. Numbers are limited so call 07 838 6606 to book.
    
8. Attend the premiere screening of ‘The Couch’ – a sitcom pilot produced by Wintec staff and students – on Monday August 9 at 12pm in Wintec’s Gallagher Hub.
    
9. Come to the ‘Human Posts’ art exhibition at La Mezz Gallery. This exhibition features a range of exciting original work by post-graduate Wintec students.
    
10. Immerse yourself in film on Friday 13 at the Lido Cinema for a screening of the ‘Canvassing the Treaty’ series, a screening and discussion with director Jim Marbrook, a forum on making documentary in NZ, and a screening of Banksy’s ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’.

The majority of Spark events are free – you just need to turn up in enough time to get a seat.
