Students show skills in Get 2 Go Challenge

Wintec’s Sport and Exercise Science students helped design and coordinate a Get 2 Go Challenge involving Waikato secondary schools recently.

Nearly 2000 school students took up the nationwide Get 2 Go Challenge, run by the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (OPC) and sponsored by Youthtown.

In Hamilton, 24 teams of eight students, from schools as far away as Mercury Bay, battled it out in several different outdoor pursuit challenges including kayaking, mountain biking and orienteering. 

Wintec students ran the kayaking section of the event on Hamilton’s Lake Rotoroa.

School of Sport and Exercise Science tutors Jan Robertson and Jim Patchett set students the challenge of coming up with a series of events on the water, for more than 192 students to participate in throughout the day.

The students developed the event format – incorporating aspects of teamwork, leadership and fun – as well as preparing the venue, equipment, logistics and leadership on the day.

Waikato was the most popular region for the event with 24 teams comprising more than 192 participants. OPC Event Manager Darren Ashmore said the Waikato leg of the challenge had become their biggest event.

It is the fifth year the challenge – which was set up to encourage teenagers' participation in outdoor pursuit activities – has been held.
