International student space transformed

Our first international Masters student, Jinjing Luo from Shenzen City in southern China, has been busy turning the Globe – our international student space in the Gallagher Hub – into a functional work of art.

To complete her Masters in Design for Media Arts, she designed an environmental graphic pattern using a traditional Chinese pattern and a western graphic design method (vinyl on glass).

If you look closely you’ll notice that each swirling design is a fish with an elaborate tail. The design is a blend of a carp fish - a traditional Chinese symbol - and a Phoenix tail. The graphic design pattern relates to a well-known Chinese proverb: ‘Carp fish jumping over the dragon’s gate’. Jinjing says this is a metaphor for students studying for success.

She’s extremely pleased with the Globe’s new look, which has made the space more contemporary and stylish. Already international students are flocking to the Globe, enjoying the lighter atmosphere that Jinjing’s design has created.
