Music Pathway

I remember seeing a pamphlet on Media Arts commercial music in our careers office back in the 5th form. I was sold on the idea, and wanted to quit school to become a songwriter.

At Wintec I was immersed in a round-the-clock hive of creative activity and colourful people. I enjoyed small classes, one-on-one time with passionate tutors and advanced equipment at my fingertips. I was free to develop my talents in a safe and supportive environment and finally began to see many career opportunities I never knew existed. I made great friendships - some of us are still involved in projects together now, and I built great relationships with people in the music industry as a 3rd year internship student.

Reflecting on my achievements, I know that the ability to write a song would not have been enough to get my job at New Zealand's top independent record label, get my solo album on the shelf at your local CD & DVD store, or see me organise a successful tour. I succeeded because this degree gave me a wide range of skills and knowledge relevant to todays commercial music industry. Being able to understand a recording contract, set up a P.A system, design a website, shoot a music video, write a radio ad or put together a press kit is what makes Media Arts graduates survivors in the real world.

Over those three years, Wintec was my home and the people there became my family. Two years later, the bonds are strong and the doors still open.

I promise you - the creative industries in New Zealand are exciting and full of opportunity. This degree will prepare you to be a part of it. I could go on - but I have a song waiting to be written, and you have an application form to fill out. Just know that you'll be in good hands.

Chanelle Davis recently won the New Zealand Songwriter's Trust Award, with her song 'Dear Jon'. The song was chosen from nearly 200 entries and two of Chanelle's other songs were also finalists in the Songwriter of the Year awards.

Chanelle says the $2500 prize money will help her record five new tracks, which will be added to her current album 'Better Than Alone.' The album will be re-released in time for her nationwide tour in September.
