Personal Statement

Wintec's Media Arts department offers programmes to fully equip students for industry standard expertise, as well as being an exceptional, creative educational environment to prepare them for contemporary fine arts practice.

Teaching within the critical theory component of the degree brings with it a challenging and contemporary dialogue that is both actively encouraged and engaged in by students, where they articulate a knowledge of their work in a contemporary context, and gain understanding of theoretical art-based issues.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT (Auckland, NZ) in 1995, and received an MFA with distinction from Pratt Institute (New York, USA), 2000. During my time in New York, I was involved as teaching assistant to my professor in the critical theory department, and also had the opportunity to intern with a cross-section of New York artists and galleries.

Since returning to New Zealand, I have taught at Unitec School of Art and Design in Auckland, and Elam School of Fine Arts before joining the staff and students at Wintec, Hamilton in 2006.

I exhibit in New Zealand, Australia and New York, and regularly participate in international group shows. My primary practice utilises photography and painting to engage with issues of perception, representation and ways of seeing.
