Industry Connections

Media Arts maintains close relationships with the professional contexts which graduates enter into. Teaching staff are experienced practitioners in their fields, and maintain high levels of research.

Our students gain considerable industry contact through both the visiting lecturer programme and visits to specialist studios and exhibitions.

Our third-year Internship course allows students to receive credit for undertaking a three-week industry placement. Media Arts also maintains an e-mail list notifying students and graduates of relevant employment opportunities.

Through Media Arts many students establish contacts and professional networks which lead to employment even before they graduate!

Special Awards 2009

Media arts would like to congratulate all the students who received awards at the special awards ceremony this year. Many thanks also to our generous sponsors who donated the prizes, many of whom also came to the ceremony to present their awards to the students. View the 2009 Special Awards winners.

Editor-in-Residence

The role of the Editor-in-Residence is to mentor students and add value to Wintec's journalism programmes by exploring learning opportunities and strengthening industry links. Julie Starr became Editor-in-Residence in 2008 and has worked in journalism for 20 years as a reporter, subeditor, radio presenter, editorial manager and change agent.

Julie recently returned to New Zealand, having worked in London as one of the core members of the design team who created Telegraph Media Group's integrated multimedia newsroom. Past positions have included Chief Sub-Editor on the Business section of The Daily Telegraph and reporter with the NZ Herald. Julie currently works with businesses, journalists and educators seeking to expand their digital repertoire and publishes a blog, The Evolving Newsroom, about digital developments in the news industry.

Fashion-Designer-in-Residence

The newly-established Fashion-Designer-in-Residence position gives students a unique insight into the fashion industry. In 2008 Annah Stretton became the first person to hold this position. Based in the Waikato, Annah has emerged from a background of wholesaling mainstream garments to become a leading force in New Zealand-based fashion design. Visit Annah's website.

Ramp Gallery

Ramp Gallery was established in 1997 as a contemporary art space in the Department of Media Arts at the Waikato Institute of Technology (then Waikato Polytechnic). Ramp seeks to provide a venue for innovative work and foster critical discussion about contemporary art.

Through Ramp, Wintec students regularly have the opportunity to engage with leading contemporary artists. They can also volunteer in the gallery in a variety of roles, gaining valuable work experience in the area. Ramp is currently seeking to expand its operations to include relationships with other tertiary spaces, artist residencies, artist talks, a publications profile and web-based projects. Visit the Ramp Gallery Website.

Internships

Your study in Media Arts will be project driven and involve collaboration with students from outside your field. You can also gain real-world professional experience through internships, and receive module credit for it. Our third year Internship module offers students direct experience with highly regarded employers in the industry. Click here for more information about Internships.

Employer Partnership Groups

The School of Media Arts enjoys frequent and robust meetings with their Employer Partnership Groups in the fields of Fashion Design, Interior Design, Radio Broadcasting, Media Arts and Post-Graduate. Employer Partnership Groups offer a way for businesses and community groups from industry sectors to be involved with the School and discuss key industry trends, issues and direction. For more information on Wintec’s Employer Partnership Groups, click here »

ScreenMark

Wintec's Bachelor of Media Arts (Moving Image) has been awarded a ScreenMark, the screen industry's seal of approval. ScreenMark is a quality assurance endorsement by the New Zealand Screen Council. It is given only to qualifications of the highest standard that prepare graduates for work within the screen industry.

In its report, the Screen Council praised the BMA (Moving Image) for its facilities, staff dedication and overall excellence in training. The accreditation process took almost a year. Click here to read more about Wintec & ScreenMark.

Max FM 107.1 - Hamilton's student radio station

Max FM is Wintec's campus-based student radio station that acts as a social link between students, the campus and local musicians, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Max FM started in 2004 and has grown ever since, now operating as a teaching tool in the NZQA-accredited Certificate in Radio Broadcasting. The Max FM site offers information and the chance to listen to the station live online.
