I am honoured to be appointed as Wintec kaumātua. A former student and tutor at Wintec, I'm privileged to take up this role which is held in high regard by Wintec. I look forward to working with the Council Chair, the CEO, staff and students to share my experience and knowledge of Tainuitanga protocol, and tikanga.
Let us also remember and acknowledge our former kaumātua, elder, leader, and statesman the late Dr Hare Puke, who guided us through many years of service and dedication towards academic excellence. He worked tirelessly to uphold Wintec's reputation as a leading provider of high quality applied, vocational and professional qualifications in Hamilton and the greater Waikato region.

Tuatahi e tautoko ana ngā mihi ā te kaumātua, a Tame Pokaia ki a koutou e ngā mātā waka me ngā whānau hoki. Tuarua he mihi mahana ki a koutou ngā akoranga e whiriwhiri ana ki te whai kura, whai matauranga rānei hei oranga mou me te whānau hoki. Kaati rā, ko ngā mihi nui ki ngā ākoranga maha kua oti i o rātou tohu a, kua puta atu ki te whai ao, ki te ao mārama.
Wintec has made vast changes in recent years to improve access for both Māori and Pasifika students and tremendous strides in ensuring positive outcomes and success in their field of studies to get a job. It is really pleasing for instance to see a big improvement in Māori studying across a wide range of qualifications and succeeding at the higher levels of study (Level 4 upwards).
This is because strong Māori and Pasifika supports have been implemented and much work done on student engagement and experience which makes for a positive study environment. External engagement and relationships with stakeholders create many benefits and this work has commenced with Tainui and other tertiary organisations (ITP's, PTE's, University and Wānanga). Other positive initiatives are the wide range of activities such as Matariki, Māori Language Week and student art exhibitions.
As Pouārahi Māori we look forward to more dramatic changes with the modernisation of our campus which will include our new whare rūnanga and Māori input into the new boulevard entrance from the city. Welcome to Wintec and please don't hesitate to contact us.
