About Health

Nursing

Welcome to the Nursing Department within the School of Health. For over twenty-five years Wintec has provided nursing programmes which have both a national and international reputation. Registered Nurses who graduate from the School of Health are "fit for purpose" competent practitioners. These Registered Nurses are successful in gaining employment locally, nationally and internationally.

The Bachelor of Nursing programme at Wintec provides a unique curriculum within New Zealand, being the only nursing programme to offer a series of pathways which students choose mid way through their programme and follow to the point of completion. The pathways provide a strong clinical focus in Medical/Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Primary Healthcare Nursing, these pathways developed with industry stakeholders, provide our students with a clearer career focus within these specialties, thus enhancing their employment opportunities.

The Wintec learning community provides a broad range of support networks on the campus and students working in the clinical practice arena have close contact with Clinical Tutors to support and guide their clinical learning.

Midwifery

Welcome to Midwifery and Allied Health within the School of Health. Midwifery and Allied Health provides courses and programmes in Midwifery, Health Studies and First Aid.

Wintec offers the three year direct entry Bachelor of Midwifery degree. Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Midwifery programme, students graduate with a Bachelor of Midwifery. Following a successful pass of the Midwifery Council of New Zealand examination, students will be able to apply to register as a midwife with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand.

Graduates of the programme may work as Registered Midwives in self employed practice, as Lead Maternity Carers in hospitals and in birthing units throughout New Zealand.

All our midwifery lecturers work both in theory and in practice. This brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise. A number of casual specialist lecturers are also employed.

Postgraduate Studies

We are delighted to welcome you to consider Wintec's Master of Nursing and Postgraduate Nursing programmes. During the six years of postgraduate programme delivery at Wintec, we have had the pleasure of supporting a vastly diverse group of graduates whose careers and lives have been reshaped.

To be successful at this level of study takes perseverance, courage in exploring realities and possibilities, and deep curiosity. It also takes the support of family, friends and employers. Most importantly, from our perspective, it takes a unique group of educators and scholars who are primarily engaged with students as independent learners supporting an individual journey of inquiry. This type of work is located in engagement with uncertainty, multiple positioning and rich theoretical debate related to the clinical worlds of students from many different fields of practice.

Your active participation in this process is both welcomed and expected. It increases both your likelihood of success and the possibility of meaningful outcomes for your practice and the people and communities with whom you work.

Groups of students studying at this level develop long term networks. These relationships, also encompassing teaching faculty, continue to support developing practice and applied research in nursing. Graduates of Wintec are a unique alumni whom we see at professional conferences. They are recognised nurse leaders, advanced and specialist practitioners, and educators in teaching faculties.

Yes, advanced nursing study is life and career changing, and we welcome you to a shared journey.

Visit the postgraduate office website »

Tihei Mauri Ora

The symbol of the Tihei Mauri Ora stream signifies matauranga or knowledge and learning, at the top, two people sitting in cultural safety centred on the base of hauora or health.

The Tihei Mauri Ora philosophy guides the development of process to support students who identify as Māori in our programmes.

This philosophy has guided the School of Health over the past decade in the Bachelor of Nursing, Midwifery and foundation programmes.

The Tihei Mauri Ora Philosophy centers on the following principles:

that any form of knowledge, or the resultant answer that comes from effort in obtaining knowledge, may be arrived at in more than one way and that the methods used to reach learning outcomes are equitable in status

that by acknowledging other perspectives and differences, the human mind may be broadened with respect to objective and subjective knowledge

that with regard to nursing and midwifery, acknowledgement of difference contributes to standards of excellence in nursing and midwifery care, safety and management

The Tihei Mauri Ora option integrates all pertinent areas of knowledge from both the western and Māori worlds. It recognises the potential within a Māori paradigm and begins to address the needs of a minority community who are partners with non-Māori. It supports the pertinent articles of the Treaty of Waitangi (partnership, protection and participation) by implementation of a body of knowledge that is explicitly Māori. From this platform, we have been able to embrace a greater sensitivity to cultural diversity in a broader context as well.
