About Foundation Studies

The Centre for Foundation Studies consists of several units:

• Communication Studies Unit
  Provides teaching of communication and cultural studies modules to other Wintec schools.
   
• First Aid
  Provides first aid certificate qualifications.
   
• Foundation Studies
  Provides certificate qualifications to enhance study skills. The Cdertificate in Introduction to Study programmes allows students to discover what is expected at tertiary level, and gain the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succedd in further study@wintec.
   
• ACE (Adult Community Education)
  Works with community groups and Wintec schools to provide community based educational opportunities for adults.
   
• Literacy and Numeracy Embedding Unit
  Provides support to Wintec vocational tutors to help them assess/evaluate/improve their students' literacy and numeracy skills.
   
• Literacy Waikato
  Provides help with reading, writing, spelling and basic maths skills.
   

Literacy and Numeracy Embedding Unit

The role of the Literacy and Numeracy Embedding Unit is to embed literacy and numeracy strategies in a range of modules throughout various schools at Wintec.

Currently, the team is working in five schools to raise vocational tutors' awareness of their current practices. The purpose is to use tutors' current practices as a stepping stone into using literacy and numeracy strategies to promote their learners' skill levels.

The team's activities include:

• mapping the difficulty of study material
• conducting classroom observations
• designing and administering diagnostic tools

ACE (Adult Community Education)

What is ACE?

Adult Community Education (ACE) is community-based educational opportunities for adults that are aligned with national ACE priorities.

Wintec supports ACE delivery in two ways:

1. through modules offered in Wintec's own schools
2. through funding support for community groups enabling them to run their own modules

Who can enrol in an ACE module?

ACE learners must be 16 years of age or older, NZ citizens or permanent residents, and not enrolled in secondary school full time.
