The Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing provides you the opportunity to build on your foundation of knowledge and skills already achieved in undergraduate nursing degrees and subsequent clinical experience.
This programme consists of four modules; two core modules and two practice modules, covering a range of advanced specialty areas. If you successfully complete any two postgraduate modules you may choose to exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing. You can then return to complete the Postgraduate Diploma at a later date provided this is within four years of your first enrolment in Postgraduate Nursing studies.

Entry Criteria
- An undergraduate Nursing degree, or other undergraduate degree assessed as relevant by the Nursing Postgraduate Programme Committee, conferred by a New Zealand tertiary education institution with at least a B average in their grades for the final year, or
- A qualification approved as equivalent by the Nursing Postgraduate Programme Committee
Applicants who have not gained a relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification may submit a portfolio for informal transfer of credit and, if the application is successful, may be admitted on an ad eundum statum basis.
In addition to the above criteria, applicants must
- Meet any pre-requisites for specific modules, and
- Hold a current New Zealand Practising Certificate as a Registered Nurse, or
- An international candidate must be a New Zealand registered nurse and comply with 1.1 within these regulations
- the candidate is also required to have an IELTS score of 7 in each band, achieved within 12 months of first sitting the test. The language assessment must be less than two years old at the time of application, and within the past five years, must have completed 6 months of post registration clinical experience and be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week.
Applicants for the study pathway leading to award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing with endorsement in Māori Mental Health must meet the following additional and specific requirements for entry to the programme. Such applicants must:
- have at least two years’ of clinical experience in the mental health field, gained within the past five years,
and
- identify as Māori, demonstrating knowledge of their whanau, hapu and iwi,
and
- demonstrate understanding of the role of tikanga Māori within their own nursing practice.
Where there are more applications than the number of places available, selection will be determined on the basis of:
- whether applicants meet the pre-requisites for each paper, and
- commitment to study as demonstrated at admission interviews, and
- references supplied.
Where the industry and/or community have indicated a need for graduates from the programme with a particular specialisation, and/or have provided sponsorship for candidates to undertake modules leading to a particular specialisation, applicants for that specialisation and/or those modules may be given priority.
All applicants are required to supply two written references from senior Nurses who have supervised them and / or academic staff members who have taught them for a previous qualification.

About the Faculty
