This programme is designed to extend and deepen an individual’s professional practice and apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of fields of health and social practice which include: occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery, social work, counselling and human services. It will offer learning opportunities designed to inform your practice and develop valued knowledge in Treaty based practice.

You will learn and grow professionally while undertaking interactive and experiential-based education.

This Postgraduate Diploma will extend your existing qualifications and will allow higher level professional development that is inter-disciplinary. Gain the skills to develop, analyse and generate solutions to complex and sometimes unpredictable problems. This qualification is relevant to practitioners from a wide range of practice contexts and the resulting inter-disciplinary interaction of health and social services practitioners will enhance and strengthen service delivery in the region.

An interdisciplinary context will enable graduates to extend their capacity for critical and professional/clinical reasoning for specialist practice, leadership and management in complex professional environments.

This programme is available to international students from 2013 who may be overseas qualified health or social services practitioners but does not to be New Zealand registered.

This programme will not lead to New Zealand Health or Social Service Professional Registration.

Programme Content

Complete 1 core module and select 3 from the elective moduels including HSHS804 Research for Practice (if you are intending to appy to a Masters programme).

For the supervision endorsement you need to complete 3 core modules and 1 elective module. If you intend to apply for the Masters programme, the elective must be HSHS804.

Note: Not all modules may be offered every year. Some modules will also be offered in Tauranga.

Graduate Opportunities

The aim of this programme is to provide you with greater capacity to work in Specialised Practitioner, Practice Leader, Manager, Educator, or Researcher roles either in your current field or within specialised fields of practice which include: working with children and youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, refugees and migrants and in the area of mental health. You can become skilled in a new field, or further advance your current specialisation.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health and Social Practice will position graduates well to move into Masters level qualifications at other New Zealand universities.

Entry Criteria

• A degree (or equivalent) in Health or Social Practice or related discipline, or
• Submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate best practice in Health and/or Social Practice or related professional context, including the ability to analyse and generate solutions to complex situations. The portfolio may include evidence of academic writing at level 7 or above, evidence of critical enquiry and critical reasoning, practice reflections, curriculum vitae, attestations/references.
   
• Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have a IELTS score of 7.0 or better, in all bands, or equivalent, and
• Will be required to demonstrate through portfolio the likelihood of being able to successfully achieve the programme learning outcomes.
   
• As part of the selection process all candidates will be required to complete a professional disclosure form and supply the names and contact details of two professional referees.
• There may be the requirement to attend an individual interview.

About the Faculty

The Postgraduate Office at Wintec has been created to support postgraduate students in their studies and research by providing dedicated resources and advice. Wintec also has a dedicated Research Office which is the hub of research at Wintec and caters to all researchers, both staff and students.
