This programme has been designed to complement the existing suite of professional hospitality programmes offered by the Centre for Hospitality. It is intended for you if you have prior experience in the hospitality industry and wish to acquire the knowledge and skills to manage a business unit within a large enterprise.

The National Diploma in Hospitality (Operational Management) (Level 5) has strands in Kitchen Management, Food and Beverage Management, Rooms Division Management and Functions Management.

To study towards this qualification you must currently be employed full-time in the hospitality industry as the training and assessment is designed for the workplace.

On successful completion of this programme you will have acquired the knowledge and skills to manage a business unit within a large enterprise. It is suitable for you if you hold, or aspire to hold an Operational Manager's position in the kitchen, food and beverage, or rooms division and functions / events areas.

Programme Content

The core compulsory section of this qualification covers the areas of developing and coordinating people, supervisory management, training and assessment, hospitality operations and hospitality management.

The strands enable you to select unit standards that reflect your specialist work areas, and the core elective section allows you to select unit standards from business, computing, communication skills and hospitality areas that are required to complement your skill sets.

Entry Criteria

Candidates are required to:

• Have operational skills at Levels 2 and / or 3 and / or 4 that are relevant to their chosen strand, or
• Have equivalent experience, and preferably
• Be employed in the hospitality industry

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in the written band.

Additional Information

You will study at Wintec’s state-of-the-art Centre of Hospitality which is located on Wintec’s Rotokauri Campus. This centre includes two large commercial kitchens, a production kitchen, a restaurant with a seating capacity for 80, featuring indoor and outdoor dining, and a licensed bar. Small class sizes, a tutorial team with varied national and international industry experience, and close association with local industry and professional industry bodies, allow you to get the most out of your studies.
