Mechanical Engineers are creative, imaginative and adaptable. The role requires an eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well under pressure. The engineer must also think about the energy, environmental and safety aspects of the planned work.
Wintec’s National Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Level 6) will provide you with these skills to get you into this expanding industry.
Programme Content
The National Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Level 6) includes practical skills and theoretical knowledge for a comprehensive education in mechanical engineering.
It incorporates tuition in solid modeling, CAD drawing, engineering mechanics, materials science, manufacturing, workshop practice, electrotechnology, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, design, mathematics and engineering management in keeping with current engineering practice.
This Level 6 programme requires two years full-time study to complete. Part-time study is an option for people in employment.

The National Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Level 6) may lead to a career in design, manufacturing, product development, project, installation and commissioning, CAD / CAM, engineering management, production, power generation and sales. There are more people employed worldwide in mechanical engineering than any other area of engineering.
Entry Criteria
- 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Maths and 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Physics plus a minimum of eight credits in literacy at NCEA Level 1, or
- 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Maths and 24 credits at NCEA Level 2 in other approved subjects plus a minimum of eight credits in literacy at NCEA Level 1, or
- National Certificate in Engineering (Level 4) plus 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Maths, or
- Equivalent qualification
All candidates will be required to attend an interview.
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in the written band.
To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme including the ability to perform practical demonstrations and assessments.
Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over who do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme through a process of an interview and / or assessment.
