The National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 3) is the next stage to becoming a registered Electrician. It will provide you with a balance of theory and practical education, which will assist in developing both your practical ability and diagnostic skills.
It covers a balance of theory and practical skills assessed both on and off the job such as basic electrical theory, concepts, trade practice, New Zealand electricity supply and the practical skills required of a fully qualified electrician. Other components include first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, safeworking practices and safety testing, codes of practice and standards.
Programme Content
You will study:
- AC theory
- Single and three phase
- Electrical fundamentals DC circuits
- Electrical diagrams
- Earthing and circuit protection
- Diagnosis, testing and safety
- Communication skills
- Distribution and transmission
- Electrical machines
- Standards, regulations and Codes of Practice
This programme meets the requirements for an industry training agreement. Training agreements are available through both the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) and the Electrotechnology Industry Training Organisation (ETITO) who manage apprenticeship agreements with employers.
In addition to your study at Wintec, you will also have to complete the on-job unit standards (work-place assessments) through the ETITO or the ESITO.
This programme is available for both full-time and part-time study. Full-time programmes run for 16 weeks and commence in February and July to coincide with the completion of the Level 2 programme. Part-time study commences in February and consists of two evening classes per week, plus two one week block courses during the year. You may also enrol in modules to complete individual unit standards if required.
Career Opportunities
The National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 3) may lead to employment as an Electrician or in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics servicing, electronic security, motor rewinding and repair, switchgear fitting or industrial measurement and control.
You may wish to continue onto further study towards the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrician for Registration) (Level 4).
Entry Criteria
National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2), or an equivalent qualification.
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in the written band.
