<p>Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the exciting industry of fashion design. During this two year full-time programme you will gain knowledge about all aspects of fashion design, from basic skills in fashion design technology and production, through to high-end research and production of fashion products.</p>
<p>The practical emphasis of the programme ensures that you will gain knowledge of business processes for preparation for entry into the fashion design industry and will ready you with a thorough understanding of the current fashion climate.</p>
<p>You will develop an understanding of the relationship between design, production and distribution within the industry, as well as fashion production, culture, history, industry, retailing, distribution materials and basic skills in fashion design technology.</p>
<p>Each module is structured with the flexibility to allow you to direct the focus of your learning and development towards either design and production, retail or distribution. Elective options provide you with the opportunity to personalise the programme to suit your career direction.</p>
<h2>Programme Content </h2>
<p>You will study:</p>
<ul>
 <li>Fashion design</li>
 <li>Textiles and materials</li>
 <li>Marketing, PR and communication</li>
 <li>Fashion retailing and design strategies</li>
 <li>Business of fashion: New Zealand and international</li>
 <li>History and meaning of fashion</li>
 <li>Garment manufacturing, production processes and specifications</li>
 <li>Portfolio development</li>
 </ul>
<p>You will also undertake a work placement and some elective modules can be studied.</p>
<h2>Career Opportunities</h2>
<p>The Diploma in Fashion Design and Practice (Level 6) may lead to employment as a Fashion Retailer, Fashion Designer, Fashion Manufacturer, Fashion Buyer, Pattern Drafter, Fabric Maker and Cutter, Fashion Technician, Fashion Brand Manager or Assistant, Fashion Product Manager or Assistant, Fashion Event Manager or Assistant, Machinist, Wardrobe Designer or Software Operator.</p>
<h2>Entry Criteria</h2>
<ul>
 <li>14 credits at NCEA level 3 in each of three subjects, or</li>
 <li>48 credits at NCEA level 2 across four subjects (preferably including English and / or Mathematics, Practical Arts, Technology or Design), or</li>
 <li>completed University Entrance, or</li>
 <li>completed Year 12 (Sixth Form) Certificate in at least two subjects (preferably including English and/or Mathematics, Practical Art, Technology or Design), or</li>
 <li>successfully completed the Certificate in Media Arts (Level 4) programme (formerly known as the Introductory Certificate in Media Arts), or</li>
 <li>Equivalent qualification</li></ul>
<p>Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over that do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme through a process of an interview and / or assessment.</p>
<p>Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in the written band.</p>
<p>Candidates will also be required to:</p>
<ul><li>submit a portfolio of work as specified in the programme brochure; and</li>
<li>participate in an interview.</li></ul>

<p>Want to experience Fashion Design for a day? Talk to your STAR Coordinator or Careers Advisor and do Wintec&rsquo;s Introduction to Patternmaking and Grading Taster.</p>
