Do you want to pursue a career in the carpentry trades and learn skills in building and construction work?

The Certificate in Trade Technology (Carpentry) (Level 3) incorporates learning about the correct and safe use of hand tools, portable electric tools and woodworking machines common to construction sites. You will use these skills to work on fullsize building projects. A Level 1 First Aid Certificate, which is required for legal access to an increasing number of construction sites, also forms part of this programme.

One day a week will be available for work experience and on successful completion of the programme you will be able to seek a training agreement (apprenticeship) with a builder.

You are able to exit with the Certificate in Entry to Trades (Carpentry) on completion of the required number of modules.

Programme Content

This is a one-year programme taught across two semesters with the flexibility of an exit point after the first semester for students who have an apprenticeship.

The programme includes:

• Practical training including full size house construction
• Industrial safety
• Carpentry theory
• Estimation of quantities
• First Aid Certificate
• Industrial work experience
• Correct and safe use of tools and woodworking machines

Career Opportunities

The Certificate in Trade Technology (Carpentry) (Level 3) will allow you to gain an apprenticeship and study towards the National Certificate in Carpentry within the construction industry on commercial or domestic buildings, and can lead onto further study in the National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) and (Supervisor) and could lead to work as a Building Inspector, or working for construction companies.

Entry Criteria

Open entry, although candidates must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.
