If you are a passionate, energetic person who wants to work with people designing, delivering and managing outdoor adventure and recreation experiences, then this one year programme is for you.
The Certificate in Outdoor Adventure and Recreation (Level 4) will help you develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in outdoor adventure and recreation industries as assistant instructors.
Students actively participate in a broad range of outdoor recreation experiences at an introductory level, encouraging a high degree of motivation, personal determination and teamwork.

Career Opportunities
The Certificate in Outdoor Adventure and Recreation (Level 4) may lead to employment in the outdoor adventure and recreation industries as a Outdoor Adventure Instructor, Community Sport and Recreation Officer, Recreation and Sports Coordinator, Camp USA Leader or similar ventures, or in the area of Conservation.
Graduates of the Certificate in Outdoor Adventure and Recreation (Level 4) may pathway into the proposed Diploma in Outdoor Adventure (Level 5), Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (Level 7) or continue onto further tertiary study.
Entry Criteria
Candidates are required to have gained a minimum of either:
- 36 credits at NCEA Level 2 across 3 subjects, including 12 credits in English Level 2, or
- 36 credits from the NZQF framework at level 2, across 3 subjects, including 12 credits from a “language rich” subject such as History, Classics, Media Studies or English, or
- Other equivalent qualification (as approved by the Head of School/Centre Director or the Programme Committee)
In addition, candidates must also meet the specific literacy and mathematical requirements as follows:
- 12 credits in Mathematics/Pangaru at NCEA 1 or higher, and
- 4 credits in reading English or Te Reo at Level 2 or higher, and
- 4 credits in writing English or Te Reo at Level 2 or higher
OR
- other equivalent qualification (as approved by the Head of School/Centre Director or the Programme Committee)
Candidates who do not meet the above entry requirements may nevertheless be considered for provisional entry (if aged under 20 years) or special admission (if aged 20 or over). In such cases entry will be dependent on whether candidates demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success in the programme.
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 5.5 across all bands.
Prior to commencing the programme all successful candidates will be required to complete and submit a “Consent to Disclosure of Information” form. Candidates should be aware that some types of criminal conviction may prevent them from accessing clients and/or workplace experience, and completing the programme.
Candidates are required in their applications to indicate whether they have had a physical or mental condition. Candidates should be aware that some types of physical or mental conditions may prevent them from participating in physical elements of the programme and/or work experience placements.
Candidates will also be required to:
- Have a current Comprehensive New Zealand First Aid Certificate (or acquire one within three months of commencing the programme), and
- Have a level of fitness sufficient to fulfill the practical requirements of the programme
