<p>The Certificate in Large Animal Technology (Level 4) provides specialist training for a career in large animal technology.</p>
<p>The programme aims to give you a high level of applied knowledge which is used in the handling and performance of large animal husbandry and health procedures. You will be capable, under general supervision, of performing routine procedures on livestock and delivering services that support veterinary staff in their day to day duties.</p>
<p>You will gain knowledge and skills in:</p>
<ul>
 <li>Animal physiology and anatomy</li>
 <li>Production animal handling and husbandry</li>
 <li>Production animal first aid, diseases and health programmes</li>
 <li>Basic animal health procedures such as dis-budding with a hot iron, basic hoof trim, blood sampling and bolus administration</li>
 <li>Spore counting and other basic laboratory skills</li>
 <li>Work experience</li>
 </ul>
<h2>Programme Content</h2>
<p>You will study:</p>
<p>Semester One: Animal Care Modules</p>
<ul>
 <li>Animal Anatomy and Physiology</li>
 <li>Animal First Aid and Disease Control</li>
 <li>Animal Health and Husbandry</li>
 <li>Business Communication</li>
 </ul>
<p>Semester Two: Large Animal Technology Modules</p>
<ul>
 <li>Production Animal Handling and Health Procedures</li>
 <li>Production Animal Health and Husbandry</li>
 <li>Large Animal Technician - Work Placement</li>
 <li>Professional Practice</li>
 </ul>
<p>If you decide to complete your study after semester one you can receive the exit qualification of <a href="animal-care.aspx" target="_self">Certificate in Animal Care (Level 4)</a>.</p>
<h2>Career Opportunities </h2>
<p>The Certificate in Large Animal Technology (Level 4) may lead to employment as a Large Animal Technician supporting rural veterinary practices and other organisations that deliver specialist on-farm livestock health and production services.</p>
<p>If you&rsquo;re a Farmer, Sharemilker, SPCA Inspector, Livestock Agent or Animal Research Technician, you will be able to apply the skills gained on this programme to pursue specialist opportunities in your industries.</p>
<h2>Entry Criteria </h2>
<ul>
 <li>24 credits at NCEA Level 1 with at least 12 credits in English and 12 credits in one other subject area, or</li>
 <li>Equivalent qualification, or</li>
 <li>Level 2 qualification or higher in a related subject area</li>
 </ul>
<p>Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over who do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme through a process of an interview and / or assessment.</p>
<p>To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.</p>
<p>Applicants whose first language is neither English nor M&#257;ori may be interviewed to assess their level of English competency, or are required to have an IELTS score of 6.0 or better in the academic and written bands.</p>
<p>Please note: If you have a Wintec Certificate in Animal Care or equivalent then you can transfer your credits and enter directly into the second semester of the Certificate in Large Animal Technology (starting July).</p>
