<p>Interested  in getting involved in a trade but unsure which one best suits you? Wintec’s Certificate  in Introduction to Trades (Level 2) will allow you to explore a range of trade  options so you can work out where you want to take your career.</p>
<p>The programme is split into two with the first half introducing you to a  range of trades and in the second half allowing you to specialise in a specific  trade strand. You will learn by practical experience, industry visits and  discussion with employers or others involved in specific industries.</p>
The strands currently included in the programme  for the second semester are in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,  Plumbing and Gasfitting, Carpentry, Security, Motor Industry (Automotive  Electrical and Mechanical),  Motor  Industry (Collision Repair), and Extractive Industries (Mining). 
<h2>Programme Content</h2>
<p>The first semester of the programme allows you to experience a range of  trades and to understand the requirements and career options available to you.  You will learn generic trade skills through applied learning and projects. And  also develop skills for the workplace including communication, mathematics,  time management, goal achievement, problem solving and self direction. Academic  counselling will also help you to develop your skills in literacy, numeracy and  communication in a practical context.   These skills will enhance your confidence to continue on to higher  levels of training.</p>
<p>In  the second semester you will focus on a specific trade strand.  Depending on the strand chosen you may be  able to apply for the following National Certificate qualification (in addition  to the Certificate in Introduction to Trades (Level 2). </p>

<h2>Career Opportunities </h2>
<p>The Certificate in  Introduction to Trades (Level 2) provides you with a foundation of industry and  capability skills that will allow you to enter higher level training in the  trade that you are interested in.</p>
<p>Specific modules you may study  in this programme may be credited towards Level 2 National Certificates,  related to the strand you select, and in many cases, towards Level 4 National  Certificates. You can continue your training at Wintec or in the workplace  through apprenticeships. </p>
<h2>Entry Criteria</h2>
<p>Entry is  open but candidates need to demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success. </p>
<p> It is recommended that candidates have a  minimum of 8 credits in NCEA Level 1 English and Mathematics and/or Physics or equivalent  knowledge.  </p>
<p>Candidates  must be physically able to carry out any practical components of the programme.  Candidates with disabilities are eligible to enrol in this programme and may be  provided with the necessary resources to attain the learning outcomes where  practicable, but must, at the time of enrolment notify Student Learning  Services of their needs.</p>
<p>There are specific  legal and health requirements for candidates who select the following strands:</p>
  <ul>
  <li><strong>Security strand:</strong> candidates must hold or be able to obtain a  Certificate of Approval (COA) from the Registrar of Security Guards and  Investigators</li>
<li><strong>Extractive Industries strand:</strong> candidates must meet specific legal and health  requirements</li>
</ul>
<p>Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in the written band.</p>
<h2>Additional Information</h2>
<p>You will study at Wintec’s Rotokauri campus which is widely regarded as one  of the best Trades training areas in the country. Its modern, open plan  workshops contain up-to-date equipment to help you learn all the necessary  practical skills. The tutors are well-qualified, industry experienced and  well-versed in the latest technology.   All this makes Wintec Trade graduates well sought after in the  industry.   </p>
