This full-time 18 week programme is designed to prepare students for further study by developing an understanding of what is expected at tertiary level and by providing opportunities to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in tertiary education.

There are two streams in this programme:

• The Level 4 stream is for you if you wish to move on to diploma or degree level study.
• The Level 4 health stream is for you if you wish to go on to further study in nursing, midwifery, sports science or health-related programmes.

Programme Content

You will study:

• Writing Skills (Level 4 & Health) Including essay writing, assignment preparation, report writing, reflective journal writing, referencing in-text and compiling bibliographies.
• Communication Skills (Level 4 & Health) Including written and oral presentation skills, study skills and locating and organising information.
• Technology for Tertiary Study (Level 4) Including basic word processing, internet, online learning, PowerPoint, Publisher, and using technology to support study and assignment preparation.
• Personal and Professional Development (Level 4) Including learning styles, basic principles of learning, stress management, time management.
• Introduction to Maths and Science in Health (Health) Including functions of the healthy human body and mathematics skills pertaining to drug calculations.
• Intro Health Studies & Human Growth/Development (Health) Including definition, history and politics of health; health living for self and others; contemporary health issues and health interventions; human growth and development.

Graduate Opportunities

The Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 4) may lead to further study at certificate, diploma and degree level.

Entry Criteria

Candidates are required to have gained NCEA Level 1 - 12 credits in English, or an equivalent qualification.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in the written band..

Candidates who have not obtained the required IELTS score or Wintec ESOL assessment tool will be required to enrol concurrently in a recognised English language programme at Wintec.

Candidates who do not meet the entry requirements may nevertheless be considered for provisional entry (if aged under 20) or special admission (if aged 20 or over).

Candidates may be required to participate in an interview selection process.

Transition Arrangements

Students enrolled prior to 2011 may complete under 2010 programme regulations for Health endorsement until 2012.
