Do you love fashion and people? Would you like a career that you can travel around the world with? Then the creative and skillful career of hairdressing could be an option for you.

Wintec’s Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 2) is what you will need to start this exciting career. This one year programme will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for apprenticeship and career prospects in the hairdressing industry.

At Wintec, practice and theory are taught hand in hand. You will have countless opportunities to work with real clients in our fully equipped salons. Along the way, you will learn the core skills of colouring and styling.

Additionally, you will develop an awareness of salon organisation and learn customer service and retailing skills. These skills are valuable as you may wish to own and operate your own hairdressing business. You will also complete work experience which provides you with an opportunity to enhance your learning.

If you want to push the boundaries and get creative, there are opportunities to enter hairdressing competitions and hair model photo shoots.

Units may be credited towards the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Hairdressing Practice) (Level 4).

Programme Content

Communication and customer service skills are taught so that you are able to work closely with your clients in a commercial environment.

Merchandising and selling skills are key to a professional salon and these are applied in our state of the art training facilities. Other areas to be developed as part of the training environment are developing safe work practices, time management, daily banking reconciliation and stock control for salons.

You will also learn the key practical skills of colouring, hair ups, perming and foiling, both via practice and in the training environment. Classic and contemporary hair design is incorporated into all aspects of the training provided.

Career Opportunities

The Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 2) may lead to employment in the hairdressing industry, an apprenticeship, completion of hairdressing practice, hair products Sales Representative, Colourist, Salon Owner and there are work-from-home opportunities.

You may also wish to further your study and go on to complete the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4).

Entry Criteria

Open entry, although candidates must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

Selection will be made on the basis of previous academic achievement and other relevant experience, as well as a demonstration of excellent communication skills, a good command of English, a mature attitude, self motivation and a genuine interest in the hairdressing industry.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in the written band.

Additional Information

You will study at Wintec’s Centre for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy which is located on the first floor of the Tower Building, Ward Street, Hamilton. The facility has two fully equipped hairdressing salons and beauty clinics. All equipment is up to date to ensure you receive exposure to current trends and industry requirements. Small class sizes, a tutorial team with varied national and international industry experience, and close association with local industry and professional industry bodies, allow you to get the most out of your studies.

Throughout the year you may be provided with work experience opportunities for charities such as Hospice and Canteen. Fashion events held in the Waikato may request the services of you to transform models for the catwalk. Each year hairdressing and beauty therapy students have worked alongside Wintec’s media arts students on photo shoots, these photos can then be entered into appropriate competitions.

If you want to get your hairdressing career underway while still at school a range of hairdressing appropriate unit standards can be taught at your school.
