<p>The Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Education (CATE) (Level 5) is designed for you if you are involved in adult education and training in the public or private sector. It provides you with the opportunity to apply the latest theories and practices related to adult teaching and learning in your work environment.</p>
<p>If exiting the programme after successful completion of the 15 credit module, Introduction to Adult Learning, you will be awarded the Certificate in Adult Teaching.</p>
<h2>Programme Content</h2>
<p>The CATE programme consists of four compulsory modules (including Introduction to Adult Learning) and three elective modules. There are 45 credits in total. All modules have both a theoretical and practical focus, as you apply the principles learned to your own situation.</p>
<p>The modules are offered in a range of different formats – online, one week block courses, weekly sessions, and sessions during the day and in the evening.</p>
<h2>Compulsory Modules</h2>
<p>Introduction to Adult Learning<br />This module should be completed before enrolling in other CATE modules. Designed to prepare you for working with adults; this module is introductory, practical and emphasises the importance of planning, preparation and variety in teaching. It involves reflecting on and developing personal skills; and is both challenging and enjoyable.</p>
<p>Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the <a href="adult-teaching.aspx" target="_self">Certificate in Adult Teaching</a>.</p>
<p>Designing and Assessing Educational Programmes<br />This module focuses on the basic principles underpinning sound course design and assessment approaches. You will become familiar with the theory and practice of course design and assessment by actively designing and/or critiquing your own course and assessments.  </p>
<p>Exploring Culture Identity and Learning in Aotearoa/NZ<br />This module aims to provide a learning experience that examines the dimensions of culture and identity as they manifest themselves for tutors in our society; to develop a clear understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi / Treaty of Waitangi in the context of community and tertiary education; to examine issues relating to the multi-cultural classroom. </p>
<p>The Teacher as Reflective Practitioner<br />This module aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective reflective practice; and will include an evaluation of your teaching through an observation, and leadership of a forum session with other module participants. </p>
<h2>Elective Modules</h2>
<p>You are required to complete elective modules totaling a minimum of 15 credits.</p>
<p>Elective modules include:</p>

  <li>Basic Counselling Skills</li>
  <li>Cyberteaching: The Internet as an Educational Resource</li>
  <li>Introduction to eLearning</li>
  <li>Invitational Education    </li>
  <li>Supporting Literacy and Numeracy in Content-based Teaching    </li>
  <li>Self-paced Projects</li>
</ul>
<h2>Career Opportunities</h2>
<p>The Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Education (Level 5) may lead to employment as a Teacher or Tutor in an adult education environment, a Staff Trainer or Technical Trainer.</p>
<h2>Entry Criteria</h2>
<ul>
  <li>12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in English, or</li>
   <li>grade C or better in School Certificate English, or</li>
  <li>Equivalent qualification.</li>
  </ul>
<p>In addition, candidates are required to be working as adult educators in some capacity or to have access to an environment in which they can practice their skills as adult educators.</p>
<p>IELTS requirements in the Academic Regulations do not apply to this programme.</p>
<p>Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over who do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme through a process of an interview and / or assessment.</p>
<h2>Additional Information </h2>
<p>*This programme may be eligible for Student Loan when studying other courses in an approved programme. It is not Student Allowance apporved. Please enquire for more details.</p>
