The Bachelor of Midwifery is a unique programme which will lead you onto registration as a qualified Midwife. This programme will prepare you to provide autonomous midwifery care for women in a variety of settings.

This programme is studied full-time and must be completed within four years. Your first year is mainly theory-based, the second year is split between practical and theory, and the third year is predominantly practical.

During the programme you will be able to apply your knowledge with hospital placements and with a midwife in independent practice. You will also have the opportunity to follow women through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care.

On completion of the programme you will be required to sit the National Midwifery Examination to become a registered midwife.

Modules are offered via mixed-mode delivery, so you must have computer competencies and be able to access a computer and the internet.

Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Midwifery may lead to employment as a Registered Midwife in hospitals, birthing units and communities, or as a Lead Maternity Care Giver.

Entry Criteria

Candidates who have no midwifery or nursing qualification must have gained:

• a minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher in four subjects on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), or equivalent including
• at least 14 credits in Biology or Chemistry, or equivalent , and
• 14 credits at NCEA level 3 or higher in an English language rich subject (such as English, History, Art History, Classics, Geography or Economics) or equivalent, and
• a further 14 credits at level 3 or higher in two additional subjects or domains on the NQF or equivalent, and
• a minimum of 14 credits at NCEA level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the NQF, or equivalent.

Registered nurses seeking entry into the programme on the basis of their nursing qualification or nursing practice experience must hold registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Comprehensive Nurse, or a Registered General and Obstetric Nurse and must provide a Certificate of Good Standing from the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Registered health practitioners from other disciplines who have a qualification at level 4 or above, seeking entry into the programme on the basis of their health professional qualification and practice experience must hold registration with the relevant regulatory authority in New Zealand and must provide a Certificate of Good Standing from that authority.

Candidates who do not meet these entry requirements may be considered for special admission (if aged 20 or over) and will be required to produce evidence of academic equivalence of the above qualifications, or demonstrated evidence of ability to study successfully at degree level.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an overall International English Language Test System (IELTS) of 7.0, with no less than 6.5 in writing and reading and no less than 7.0 in speaking and listening; or equivalent.

Prior to commencing the programme all successful candidates will be required to demonstrate good character through referee reports and undertake a Police check.

Before undertaking clinical practice within the programme, candidates will be required to make a declaration of their immunisation status and will be required to undergo a medical at their own expense.

Candidates who do not have a current Annual Practising Certificate as a Nurse or Midwife must hold a current Comprehensive New Zealand First Aid Certificate throughout the duration of the programme.

Candidates are required to have computing and word processing skills prior to starting the programme.

Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills and self-responsibility in relation to their learning and their practice.

Candidates must supply two personal reports describing their personal qualities, communication skills, and rationale for their suitability to midwifery.  These must be completed by a current and/or previous employer, or a person of good standing in the community (not a friend or relative).

All shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview. For candidates who request, a whānau interview is offered.
