What subjects should you take?

If you are a year or two away from finishing school then the best advice is to make sure you keep your subject options broad. Hang in there with Maths and English as long as you can (at least until the end of Year 12 if you can!) and it’s a good idea to keep going with at least one science subject as well.

If you are in your last year and have just realised you haven’t taken a subject you need, DON’T PANIC! Talk to your careers teacher or contact our recruitment advisor to suss out other possible options.

What sort of things are employers looking for?

All employers (and our tutors too) are looking for people who can read, write and complete basic equations. That makes those literacy and numeracy credits your teachers keep telling you about absolutely critical!

Other things that crop up on employers’ wish lists are:

• good analytical skills
• work experience
• flexibility
• leadership and teamwork skills
• good oral and written communication
• high motivation
• reliability
• energy and enthusiasm
• good academic results
• an ethical approach

Extra-curricular activities and part time work will help you to develop these.
